7 Days in Padstow

01 Apr

Day 1

Excellent! You have just arrived in Padstow after a good/uneventful/stressful/awful journey and you can relax. Have a cup of tea, put the beer in the fridge and explore the town. Lovely isn’t it?

Day 2

You’ve had enough of tarmac so today leave the car and stay around Padstow.  Take a walk up to the War Memorial and onto St George’s and, if you’re still bouncy and energetic, continue out to Stepper Point and return via Prideaux Place and the deer park. Alternatively you could take the passenger ferry over to the beach at Rock – yes, it is a sandy beach and yes, it’s called Rock.

Day 3

Time for a drive. Head to the other side of the Camel Estuary via Wadebridge to scenic Port Isaac for a browse. Doc Martin was filmed here and it’s very popular but then so is football and I don’t understand that either. Continue up the coast to Tintagel and look at the splendid castle renowned for King Arthur and his merry knights scampering around the cliffs and also a few tacky shops selling memorabilia. If you’ve time visit Boscastle and inspect the reconstruction work done in the aftermath of the devastating flood ten years ago. It’s very pretty.

Day 4

The Camel Trail today! Cycling is a fun way to do this because it’s pretty level so no huffing and puffing, there’s oceans to sea (apologies) and Wadebridge (5 miles) is good place to explore when you arrive. The town retains many independent shops including a bookshop (hurrah). Still got iron in your legs? Cycle the full 17 miles to Wenford Bridge and back.

Day 5

Visit the Eden Project. This is one place everyone has heard of and it’s essentially large greenhouses in a pit but none the worse for that. You can easily spend the day there but if you prefer something a bit quieter try The Lost Gardens of Heligan instead.  An evening meal in Fowey would be a great ending to the day but then so would the pub.

Day 6

Big decisions for the last full day so here are some suggestions: Truro for shopping, St Ives for the Tate and painty heaven, Looe for Padstow on the south coast, Lanhydrock house near Bodmin for a history fix or you could just stay in and look out of the window. Rest = good.

 Day 7

The clear up begins as you sweep sand out of the fridge, try to stuff clothes into bags and wonder why you bought 3 packets of pasta with you when the food is so scrumptious in Padstow. Off home sadly, but resolve to come again next year. Please.
