Pilot Gigs

07 Mar

Gigs were originally built at the end of the 18thCentury in Cornwall to take the pilot out to the sailing ships. The boats needed to be fast and which ever reached the anchored ship first was rewarded. When a new gig was built it was tested against others and this is how gig racing was born.

Padstow Gig Rowing Club was established in 1988 and is based at the Red Brick Building. During the spring and summer crews train twice a week in the old boats Teazer and Dasher. The club regularly competes in events held as part of the CPGA racing calendar and they also hold club race nights where rowers of all abilities row in mixed crews in the ‘Doom Bar Challenge’.

This year Padstow Gig Club celebrates 30 years since the launch of the oldest boat ‘Dasher’ and there will an event on 30 March to celebrate the occasion.
